The Leibniz Institute for Psychology is called ZPID. 
We are part of the Leibniz Association. 
The Leibniz Association is a group of 
research institutes all over Germany. 

There are about 96 institutes.
The institutes research in these areas:

  • Nature
  • Technology
  • Social Sciences:
    This is about how people live together.
  • Humanities: 
    This includes language and art.

All institutes work independently.
This means: The institutes decide for themselves how they work.

The name "Leibniz" comes from the scientist 
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
Leibniz lived more than 300 years ago.

About Us

Psychology is a science. Here, people study:

  • How people think and feel.
  • How people behave in certain situations.
  • Mental illnesses, such as depression.

Experts in this field are called psychologists.

The ZPID is important for psychology research
in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
The ZPID helps researchers:

  • Find scientific texts.
  • Plan studies.
  • Publish their research results.

Open Science and Research

The ZPID supports Open Science.
Open Science means:
Share all steps of research openly.
Researchers share many things with each other.
People know what other colleagues are working on and how they do it.

The ZPID does its own research on these topics:

  • Acceptance of Science:
    How much do people trust science?
  • Metascience:
    How can research be made better and safer?
  • Big Data:
    How can huge amounts of data help us
    understand human behavior?
    Researchers work with many different data sets. 
    They find important data on the internet.
    Computers collect huge amounts of data.
    We call these huge amounts "Big Data."

    Big Data helps researchers understand human behavior better.

Most research is done in English.
Many people around the world can read and understand English.

    Texts and a dictionary about psychology topics.
  • PubPsych:
    A portal to search for scientific texts.
  • PsychOpen GOLD:
    A platform for publishing scientific work.
  • PsychArchives:
    A repository for research findings in psychology.
    Many different data sets are stored here.

For the employees at ZPID, work should fit well

They can have a lot of say in their work and their working hours.

In 2025, the ZPID received the “audit berufundfamilie”
award for the third time. This award shows
that work and family fit together very well at the ZPID.
