The “Preregistration for Quantitative Research in Psychology (PRP-QUANT)” Template was published in 2022 by Bosnjak and colleagues to support the preregistration of quantitative studies in psychology. Through detailed prompts and guidance, it helps researchers plan their studies precisely, reduce unintended flexibility, and increase transparency.
Since its initial release, the template has been continuously tested empirically and optimized. This fourth version builds on a recent study by Spitzer, Kroeger and Mueller (2026), who examined the extent to which the template can help limit unintended flexibility. Since reducing researchers’ degrees of freedom increases the interpretability of research results, a high degree of restrictiveness is an important quality criterion. The study showed that preregistrations based on the PRP-QUANT Template are already more restrictive than those using a less detailed template. The findings were incorporated directly into the revision to increase the restrictiveness further. In addition, the update incorporates new minimum criteria for preregistrations proposed by Hahn et al. (2025) as well as feedback from two community events at SIPS 2025 and the Open Science Retreat 2025. To provide even better support for researchers, a detailed help section with tips and resources has also been added.
The newest, fourth version of the template is now available on PreReg.
