The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut

is a research institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. In its role as a senior federal authority, it is responsible for batch release testing and marketing authorisations of vaccines and biomedicines and performs research in the field of the life sciences. Thanks to its national and international networks, it is a competent contact for the public sector, science, medicine, politics, and business.

About the Section Biostatistics

Responsibilities of this section include the evaluation of applications for clinical trials, marketing authorisation applications for national and European marketing authorisations of medicines, and the participation in scientific advice of pharmaceutical companies and researchers. Besides, it supports our in-house working parties in performing and evaluating experiments and conducts statistic and methodological research with focus on regulatory affairs.

About the project

The vacancy is available within the IMI project COMBINE, which is one of the 9 projects under the umbrella of the AMR Accelerator. The scientific objective of COMBINE is to address capability building questions to advance preclinical and clinical development of new medicines to prevent or treat antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections. The candidate will work mainly in WP4 (clinical trial design). The project is carried out in close co-operation with European universities and research centres, the European pharmaceutical industry (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, EFPIA), small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and regulatory authorities and is scheduled to end on 31st October 2025.

Your Responsibilities

  • Acquisition of data from clinical trials of vaccine and monoclonal antibody candidates
  • Responsibility for the evaluation of integrated datasets and of study meta-data, including data from regulatory documents
  • Preparation and publication of manuscripts and presentation at conferences
  • Representation of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut in internal and external project bodies
  • Support the regulatory activities of the Section Biostatistics

Job Requirements

  • Advanced degree in epidemiology, medicine, life sciences, (bio)statistics or equivalent academic degree
  • Successful PhD or comparable experience in research in a relevant subject area
  • Relevant experience in statistical data analysis systems (preferably R), including handling high-dimensional data and data integration; familiarity with the data standard CDISC is desirable
  • Enthusiasm for clinical research questions and affinity for understanding biological mechanisms, preferably in the areas of vaccines, monoclonal antibodies or antimicrobial resistance (prior experience is a plus)
  • Experience in planning and evaluation of clinical studies and interest in regulatory questions
  • Excellent team and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, care, and conscientiousness
  • Enjoys job-related travelling within Europe on a regular basis
  • Excellent command of the English language, oral and written and basic knowledge of German are expected

The position is available from the starting date for three years, but no longer than 31.10.2025.

The payband is E 14 TVöD Bund. The assignment to a payband is made based on the consideration of your individual professional experience.
