Research Associate in Sensory Neuroscience

(full-time, Salary Scale E 13 TV-L)

Reference No: 2021/244. This position is available as of January 1st, 2022, or by agreement. The initial 2-year position can be extended for another 3 years after successful evaluation. In principle, this position can be divided into two half-time positions.

The University of Konstanz is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up programme, the Excellence Strategy.

The position is available within the Galizia Lab (http//neuro.uni.kn). We are an interdisciplinary team at the Neurobiology Department and the Centre for Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour and study the neural basis of olfactory coding in insects, notably in honeybees and in fruit flies. We use calcium imaging, electrophysiology, behavioural experiments, and computational simulations.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop your own research field, preferably aiming to understand the neuronal basis of olfactory processing and social behaviour of bees or fruit flies, with a particular emphasis on how olfactory coding changes during sleep
  • Participate in collaborative research projects within and outside the department, in particular within the Excellence Cluster on Collective Behaviour
  • contribute to teaching in Neuroscience (Bachelor and Master level)

Your Competencies

  • You should hold a Ph.D. and have a background in neurobiology and behaviour of insects, and demonstrated research experience
  • Proficiency in a programming language, and in quantitative Biology
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • Applicants working on one or more of the following subject areas are particularly welcome: Insect olfaction and olfactory coding, optical imaging and microscopy, computational neuroscience, collective behaviour, odour communication in social insects
