Based on the success of the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) in the German federal and state Excellence Strategy, the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science invites applications for a
W3 Liebig-Part-Time-Professorship (25%) in Computational Cognitive Neuroscience
The position is offered with the earliest possible starting date. Reference is made to § 61 Para. 8 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG), the non-tariff terms of employment apply, and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. The appointment of the professorship is initially limited until December 31st, 2025. There is the possibility to extend the duration of the professorship up to a maximum of six years, depending on financial aspects. The professorship can be transformed into a permanent professorship, also depending on financial aspects.
By filling this position, the JLU strives to attract excellent and internationally renowned scientists and to extend international collaborative research initiatives with the aim to strengthen the JLU’s research profile as outlined in the Liebig concept. Applicants need to have a position as a professor at an institution other than the JLU, preferably abroad in order to strengthen international research collaborations. The part-time professorship at the JLU needs to be compatible with the applicant’s main activity.
As an internationally well-known researcher, the future part-time professor is expected to contribute to the JLU focus area „Mechanisms of Perception and Adaptation“ and especially to current collaborative research programs of the faculty, in particular the Collaborative Research Center/Transregio (CRC/TRR) 135 “Cardinal Mechanisms of Perception: Prediction, Valuation, Categorization”, as well as to planned collaborative research initiatives. In fulfillment of his/her teaching responsibility (2 h class per week), the successful candidate will contribute to the new master program “Mind, Brain and Behavior” starting in winter semester 2022/23. The future part-time professor is expected to further increase neuroscientific research activities at the Bender Institute of Neuroimaging (BION) and the Research Campus of Central Hessen and to contribute to international collaborative research projects. It is also expected that the future part-time professor will be committed to the JLU as indicated by collaborations within the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science and other JLU faculties (e.g., Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Geography). Including diversity and gender aspects in research and teaching is desirable.
We are looking for a candidate whose research program in the field of perception and action has a focus on computational cognitive neuroscience, demonstrated by excellent scientific work on the fundamentals of color and form constancy and on mathematical modeling of the mechanisms underlying decision and perception, especially based on neuroscientific methods (e.g. fMRI, EEG). Excellent international research activities demonstrated by a track record of high quality international publications and successful external funding are required. Consistent with the aim of strengthening the research activities at the BION, demonstrated physical-technical expertise is highly desirable. International teaching experience (especially in English) in the field of perception, action and learning as well as neuroscientific methods is required.
JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.
