Recruitment in the Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology at Durham University seeks to appoint up to eight talented individuals to the role of Assistant Professor across multiple recruitment calls this year. In the current call, we welcome applications from those with research and teaching interests in Behavioural Science to join our Quantitative Social Psychology group. We are particularly eager to hear from applicants with expertise in behaviour change who will contribute to our Behavioural Science Masters programme.

About the Department

The Department of Psychology is an internationally recognised centre of research excellence and interdisciplinarity across the breadth of psychological and behavioural science. We are currently ranked in the top 100 of Psychology Departments world-wide according to the QS World Rankings. The department’s research groupings reflect our major areas of activity: Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Science, and Quantitative Social Psychology. The department delivers internationally excellent research across all of its research groups. We are committed to maintaining and building on this research excellence across the entire breadth of psychology. The department houses research centres in developmental disorders, learning and memory, neuroimaging, and vision underpinning our collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to societal challenges. The department also has strong links with other centres and institutes across the university including the Behaviour, Ecology and Evolution Research Centre, the Centre for Visual Arts and Culture, the Institute of Advanced Study, and the Wolfson Research Institute. We also have a strong collaborative link to the James Cook University Hospital.

With recent expansion into a second building and over £2M investment in research infrastructure over the past four years, the department has outstanding research facilities. Our major research facilities include a 3T fMRI scanner, TMS, tDCS, EEG/ERP, eye movement tracking, virtual reality, and various biophysiological recording set-ups. The department also has a large whole-body motion capture lab, a fully equipped molecular diagnostics lab, an echo-attenuated chamber, an integrated psycho-physiological and virtual reality lab for dyadic/group interactions, as well as a suite of observation labs including our Rowan Tree Bar lab. Our collegiate approach to research allows all members of staff access across our full range of research facilities, which are supported by award winning IT and mechanical technicians.

We offer a prestigious Psychology undergraduate programme (C800), an innovative undergraduate programme in Behavioural Science (C803), as well as a suite of Masters programmes. We are committed to research-led and small group teaching. Our single honours Psychology programme achieved 91% satisfaction with our students in the 2020 NSS and we are privileged to work with outstanding students who are attracted to Durham from across the globe.

The successful applicants will join a growing group of social organisational psychologists and behavioural scientists within the Quantitative Social Psychology group, which includes researchers focusing on behaviour change in Public Health (incl. intervention development and evaluation to improve population-level dietary, smoking and alcohol consumption behaviours), public support and acceptability of societal policies (incl. prison-related policies, obesity and active travel policy), inequality, wellbeing, risk perception, diversity and inclusion, power and leadership, cross-cultural research, person perception, body image, environmental behaviour and sustainability, science scepticism, and the role of conspiracy theories in evidence evaluation. The group hosts regular group meetings, a Behavioural Science clinic, and researchers who are internationally recognised leaders in their fields.

Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in the field of Behavioural Science, with the ability to teach our students to an exceptional standard on the topic of behaviour change in health, business, or policy settings, or closely allied topics such as economic decision making, and to fully engage in the services, citizenship and values of the University. Person Specification

Candidates applying for a grade 7 post will have recently completed or be concluding their PhD and, while they may have limited direct experience of the requirements for the post, they must outline their experience, skills and achievements to date which demonstrate that they meet or that they have the potential to achieve the essential criteria.

Candidates applying for a grade 8 post must meet all of the essential criteria.

Research

Candidates must have capacity for and be progressing towards the independent development of internationally excellent research that produces high quality outcomes, including some work that is recognised as world class.

Essential Research Criteria – Grade 7

  • 1. Qualifications - a good first degree and a PhD in Psychology or a related subject (which for grade 7 candidates may be completed or under examination).
  • 2. Outputs - experience, skills and/or achievements which demonstrate experience of or the potential to produce high quality outputs, some of which is recognised as world-class. Candidates are asked to submit two research papers with their application (as outlined in the How to Apply section below). Candidates may additionally choose to submit evidence such as external peer review of their outputs.
  • 3. Personal Research Plan - evidence of a personal research plan which supports and enhances the Department’s research strategy.

Essential Research Criteria – Grade 8

  • 1. Qualifications - a good first degree and a PhD in behavioural science or a related subject.
