Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology: Research scientist 80-100%: flood related risk & behaviour in West Africa

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

Research scientist 80–100%: flood related risk & behaviour in West Africa

The interdisciplinary project “Flood forecasts and alerts in West Africa” is an EU Horizon 2020 project with a European and West African consortium. Flooding is a rapidly growing concern in West Africa, predicted to increase with climate change. There is a great need for reliable access to flood forecasts and alerts produced by a robust, locally adapted information and communication technology (ICT) system. Aim is to reinforce the cooperation between West African and European hydrologists, ICT experts, decision analysts and stakeholders. The flood forecasting and alert ICT pilot system is co-developed based on the needs and preferences of West African stakeholders and end-users.

This interdisciplinary project FANFAR runs from 2018 to the end of 2020. Details see: http://fanfar.eu/

The work package “User needs and behavioural responses” aims at prioritizing and refining the technological adaptations, according to the aims and needs of users. The social science framework, based on Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) has been developed so far. We are looking for a scientist to lead the open research questions that focus on contextual factors that may explain behavioural responses of users to the ICT system and thus increase technology adoption. Additionally, we aim to research flood-related risk perception and risk communication in relation to response measures of stakeholders. The position is based at Eawag in Switzerland, with two large workshops in West Africa in 2020. Hereby, a co-design committee meets with system developers, West African organizations, stakeholders and end-users in interactive group sessions.

Your experience

We are looking for highly motivated, diligent, precise and co-operative candidates. Your background should ideally be in quantitative social sciences, preferably psychology; or in decision analysis or hydrology. Priority is given to postdocs experienced in behavioural research and/or decision analysis. Work experience in Africa, with interdisciplinary groups and experience with workshops and interviews is an asset. You need to be fluent in English and if possible French, should have a solid research background, including good publishing skills and knowledge of statistical analyses, and e.g. R.
