The successful applicant will assume responsibilities in research and teaching in primary school education with a focus on mathematics education.

Appointment requirements are governed byArticle 102a of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz)

The successful candidate should hold a university degree, favourably in the field of education – preferably with a specialization in mathematics as well as a doctoral degree with subject-related didactical focus and research activities in the context of, or in cooperation with schools. The applicant should also have research experience that links socio-cultural theoretical research with mathematics education. He or she should have a successful teaching record at the university level, including experience teaching in international contexts. The candidate should also have an excellent record of preferably international research activities in the field of mathematics education. He or she should have experience with externally funded projects and be able to teach in German and/or English.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

The candidate will pursue independent research in the field of mathematics education as well as fully support the teacher training degree program in the subject of mathematics for Berlin elementary schools (1st through 6th grade). He or she should be willing to serve as an adviser to doctoral candidates. The scope of the professorship should also include working closely with the Dahlem School of Education as well as other departments and divisions that offer teacher training programs at Freie Universität Berlin. The new professor will also be expected to address gender and diversity issues in his/her teaching. If necessary, the candidate should be willing to raise his or her knowledge of German to a sufficient level within a reasonable amount of time (about three years).

The position entails a three-year appointment as a civil servant for a fixed period (“Beamter/Beamtin auf Zeit”). Following a successful review process (“Zwischenevaluation”), the position can be extended for another three years.
